Absolutely incredible news!!! My beautiful book Exactly As I Am (UQP 2022) has been shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards!
Shout out to my fellow shortlistees in poetry: Gavin Yuan Gao, Lionel Fogarty, Sarah Holland-Batt, and Scott-Patrick Mitchell. And thank you to judges Andy Jackson, Jazz Money and Judith Beveridge.
‘This book is an impressive and necessary work, one which will help to break down barriers and prejudices faced by transgender people. Essentially, it is a book of love and empowerment.’
Big congrats to my fellow shortlistees Michael Farrell, Lionel Fogarty, Autumn Royal, and Simon Tedeschi. And thank you so much to judges Ellen van Neerven, Pam Brown and Toby Fitch!
Winners will be announced at a ceremony on 6 September 2023.
Judges’ comments:
‘Exactly As I Am is an experimental yet accessible exploration of genderqueer politics – Rae White’s fluid use of form skewers the language of conservative politics, authority, and work. Intricate connections and difficulties of identity are performed as vibrant poetry in this tough and vulnerable, joyfully nonconformist account of non-binary living. ’
Thank you to everyone who bought, borrowed and read this book over the past year. And thank you to all the excellent folk who interviewed me about it and asked me to read poems from it.
I hope Exactly As I Am continues to reach wonderful readers, especially those who need it most.
This past year has been a particularly dark, transphobic time for my community. I hope to combat that as much as I can, by continuing to write and publish books that uplift, embrace and nurture my trans, non-binary and gender diverse siblings 💖🏳️⚧️
We chatted on the theme of “Unruly poems (ones that defy convention through structure, language, and themes)” and explored gender acceptance, discrimination, and identity, among many other things. A wonderful chat!
Last night at the launch of Exactly As I Am, I asked the audience to help me write a new poem Mad Libs style and it was the most hilarious, wonderful, heartfelt time!
The result is this poem about queerness, community and birds, which I’m so proud to be launching today on International Non-Binary People’s Day.
Exactly As I Am is also available at bookstores in-person and online. If they don’t have copies in stock, ask if you can order in!
If you can’t afford a copy and still want to read Exactly As I Am, check out your local library because libraries are great. If they don’t have copies, you can request some. ❤
I feel so privileged to be announcing this on Transgender Day of Visibility, a day when I can be visible and ‘out’ but I know so many cannot. I see you. You are part of our community and you are loved.
